Think About Your Electives for Next Year Planning Guide A few weeks after school starts back up in January each year, you will be asked to make decisions about your elective classes for the following year. What should you take? An important consideration is to think about which careers interest you and which high school subjects are recommended for specific careers. When it comes time to choose courses for next year you will be asked to write down a career goal on your Course Selection Sheet (even if you’re not sure at this point). This will help your counselor advise you on elective courses. To explore careers and find suggested high school subjects: - Go to www.careercruising.com and log in to Career Cruising
- Scroll down (on the left-hand side) to EDP Log in: (firstlastname) (lunch card #)
- Select the blue “Education Plan” button on the left hand side of the screen, select grade level, and then fill out your LHS courses.
- Click the blue “Careers That Interest Me” button. (If these careers are no longer applicable, you may want to retake the matchmaker quiz; or if that area is blank, take the matchmaker.)
- Click the career that interests you the most. (If you don’t have any saved careers or you want to choose another career to explore, click the grey “Add New Careers” button at the bottom of the page and search for another career.)
- After you click on a career link, it will take you to the career Job Description. Click on the blue “Education” button to find information about preparing for this career.
- Scroll down to “Suggested High School Subjects” to view recommended subject areas. List any classes that you would like to take on the lines below.

- Read the entire Education section for the career before leaving the program. Helpful information is provided. You can also find Related College and University programs in the Education section (unless none is required). Click “Save to My EDP” when you are done.
- To explore more careers, click the purple “Careers” tab at the top and search for careers of interest. Click “Save to My EDP” if you want to save a career to your EDP.
