Announcing Lakewood High School Poetry Out Loud Winner

Announcing Lakewood High School Poetry Out Loud Winner: Allen Gibson, 1st Place

Allen Gibson recited two pieces of poetry: "Truth Serum," Naomi Nye and "Sheltered Garden," Hilda Doolittle. Allen will compete as Lakewood's school champion at the state level competition in Lansing on Mach 1 & 2. If he advances to the national level, he will receive a $20,000 scholarship. All of our Viking competitors did an incredible job yesterday. It is no easy task to recite, from memory, poetic literature through the spoken word. Students were evaluated according to their recitation of two poems - performed in separate rounds. Katie Wittenauer, Program Officer for the Michigan Humanities Council was in attendance and shared positive comments about the Lakewood students and Poetry Out Loud experience. Thank you to Mr. Keith Kadwell for organizing and making space for this powerful student experience. A special thank you shout out to Ry Rodriguez for providing stellar photographs of the event. Join us with a virtual viking congratulations to Allen Gibson!
