We recently sat down with Jayne Flanigan, co-founder and board member, who is one of many selfless volunteers at Manna’s Market, our local food, clothing bank and baby pantry, to understand how we can best support their growing mission. Due to recent disruptions in family benefits, the pantry is serving more families than ever, relying heavily on dedicated volunteers who take deep ownership over the work—from completing training and meeting with recipients to stocking shelves. When asked what is most helpful by way of donations, Jayne shared that “cash donations are currently the most helpful and the most cost-effective way to help, as they allow the pantry to purchase needed items at a significant discount.” Cash donations ensure that dollars stretch much further, helping Manna’s Market to serve more families. Jayne emphasized that new or gently used bed-sized blankets are also greatly appreciated for distribution throughout the holiday season. Donated items such as cereal, peanut butter, canned goods, facial tissue and paper towels are always welcome, provided the food is non-expired to ensure the health and safety of the families Manna's Market serves. Services are provided to any resident within the Lakewood School District across Eaton, Ionia, and Barry counties. “The biggest rewards of this work are the families and the people,” said Flanigan. “I really enjoy working with and mentoring the high school students who volunteer to help us.” The services of Manna’s Market, are truly an act of love. The goal is to serve all families with dignity and respect.
