WELCOME, WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE
Dear Lakewood Community Member,
In his 1779 Bill for the More General Diffusion of Knowledge, Thomas Jefferson laid out the idea and purpose of public education. Two very important ideas were imbedded in Jefferson’s proposition – community and excellence. I know of few other communities as supportive in the pursuit of excellence for its young people than communities that make up the Lakewood Public Schools.
Whereas Jefferson was focused on the expectation of developing citizens for a new democracy, today the expectations of schools are numerous, varied and ever-increasing. Beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic, the staff of the Lakewood Public Schools is committed to the intellectual, physical, and emotional well-being of each individual student.
This commitment to students as individuals and learners is evident in the district’s mission, vision, and promise:
Mission: Preparing Our Students for Success
Vision: As a community, we will: Educate, Empower, and Equip our Students for Life
Promise: Every Student, Every Class, Every Day
We are proud of the rich tradition of the Lakewood Public Schools and thank those who have done so much to support the district. Whether you are currently a community member, are new to the area or are considering choosing a different, more personal approach to education for your student, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
With Viking Pride,
Steven C. Skalka Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools
