Lakewood High School students are invited to participate in Poetry Out Loud. This competition requires students to memorize and recite poetry from a curated list of poems provided by the Poetry Out Loud organization, a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation and state sponsors. Lakewood's student champion will be sent to Lansing in order to compete at the state level. State champions receive a $1000 cash award and an opportunity to compete at the national level for $20000.
The Lakewood English Department is proud to offer this opportunity to Lakewood students as a means of fostering confidence, improving public speaking skills, and offering a creative outlet for self-expression. While students are required to memorize and recite poems by established poets, they are expected to perform these recitations in a way that demonstrates an understanding of the major themes apparent in the chosen poems. Past student champions have attested to the positive experiences this competition provides. Check out Lakewood High School's 2023-2024 student champion Aurora Rice's interview regarding her experience at the state competition.
