    Mr. Slater is a class of 1962 Lakewood graduate and began serving in the U.S. Army in 1966. He attended Basic Training and AIT where he trained to be a member of the engineer corps. Mr. Slater was a member of the 513 th Engineer Company deployed to Vietnam from April 1967 through 1968. He helped to develop the infrastructure which
    assisted the armed services with operations inside of Vietnam. The 513 th Engineer Company specifically built air runways and highways to help with travel through the jungle
    terrain of Vietnam.

    Mr. Slater has been married to his wife Gretchen for 56 years. They are the parents of 4 Lakewood graduates: Troy, Trent, Jill, and Janie. Mr. Slater drove truck where he eventually retired from Grand Rapids Gravel. They currently reside in Woodland.

    Mr. Slater, please accept a round of applause of thanks, from those you have helped to defend.  We stand united with you. We honor your commitment and the sacrifices of all veterans, their families, and loved ones. Lakewood Public Schools will forever be grateful to Mr. Fred Slater.
